As you're planning your October homeschool program, you may want to consider including a few Halloween-related field trips. Whether you're learning about the history of Halloween or what fall produce is in season during October, these field trip ideas offer a fun learning opportunity for you and your daughter:
Going to the corn maze is not only fun,but it also promotes the use of a number of skills such as teamwork, problem solving and map reading. Not to mention that walking the maze is a great form of exercise for both you and your daughter. This is the only field trip where it's OK for your daughter to get lost! Work together with your daughter to determine a way out of the corn maze by using critical-thinking skills and a map. Depending on the corn maze you and your daughter visit, there may be other fun fall activities to take part in as well, including a nature hike, apple picking or a hayride. As most corn mazes are outside, be sure to dress your daughter according to the weather.
If you and your daughter are planning on making a few spooky jack-o-lanterns this holiday season, you'll want to arrange a visit to your local pumpkin patch. Your daughter can venture through the vines to find the perfect pumpkin (or pumpkins). This field trip idea is the perfect opportunity for your daughter to discover how pumpkins grow. Bring home a few extra gourds to make a homemade pumpkin pie! Many pumpkin patches also have squash, Indian corn and mums that you can consider taking home with you.
Many local theaters put on Halloween-themed productions of famous tales like "Sweeney Todd," "Macbeth," "The Addams Family" or "The Raven." Check to see what shows are playing nearest you and make sure that it's appropriate for your daughter's age before visiting.
